#1 Pressure Treated Framing

Pressure treated; wood framing is the most popular choice due to the lower cost of the product. What makes All Decked Out unique is that we use the best pressure treated lumber available at this time.  We have a supplying partner that provides us #1 grade kiln dried lumber. This pressure treated wood, prior to coming to the lumber yard, has been placed through a drying process which translates to less drying and movement after the lumber has been used on your project.  This means reduction in shrinking and warping of the framing over time, which is a part of the wood’s natural characteristics that cannot be controlled.  This means that your deck will look new for a longer period of time.  Versus, standard grade #1, wet lumber, the standard for most builders is #2 grade, which will still need to go through that drying process after installation.  That can mean more imperfections that show after the deck is constructed and begins to truly dry out so you may begin with a great looking deck but then begin to see wavy or raised decking or opening of cuts that were tight at the completion. This does not mean that rot will not occur over time and in fact on the average frame, rot can begin to occur within 8-10 years.  Knots, checking and cracks can still happen especially in pressure treated posts, that does not mean your deck will fail after that begins but it will begin to change faster than most realize.  Vertical cracks in wood posts are totally normal and to be expected. It is the natural characteristic of wood that no one has mastered yet, so it is important to understand all your options before you invest in this new project.

This is what we typically find after decking is removed and we do get requests often to just replace the decking and here is a good example of why we don't offer re-decks and recommend joist tape.

#2 Pressure Treated with Joist Tape

Pressure treated framing with joist tape installed over it will help better protect your investment.  Typically, when we see deck framing begin to rot, it's typically at the top of the joists. When screws get installed the wood contracts and expands and can cause the lumber to crack on top of the joists. Then over time water gets in there are starts to rot. We can add a butyl rubber tape over the top of the entire decks framing. Our standard is already that we will use on any section of the deck that has two joists or beams that are sistered up where there may be any flat blocking such as your border areas but for a small additional insurance and added protection joist tape can be added to your deck frame. Adding the joist tape over the joist, creates a moisture barrier and waterproofing of those areas that are vulnerable. Although this cannot guarantee against rot, it does help slow it down, so it is worth careful consideration so please ask us about it if you would like it priced out on your build.

Joist tape is absolutely worth it!

Joist tape is a highly adhesive tape designed to protect your deck's joists from moisture exposure, which can lead to mold growth and eventually rot. By preventing water from seeping into the frame, joist tape helps safeguard the structural integrity of your deck.

Benefits of Using Joist Tape:

  • Extends Deck Lifespan: Protects the joists, beams, and rim joists, increasing your deck’s longevity.
  • Moisture Barrier: Shields against water penetration, preventing damage and decay.
  • Enhanced Fastener Durability: Helps screws and fasteners remain secure, ensuring a stronger hold over time.
  • Reduces Repair Costs: Minimizes future maintenance and repair expenses by preserving the deck structure.
  • Affordable upgrade option

#3 Composite Framing

Never worry about rot again!

A newer and amazing option we are very excited to offer our client’s is a framing that eliminates use of wood all together!  Owens Corning Lumber has developed a reinforced fiberglass structural lumber that we can now build the frame with which has a proprietary corrosion resistant technology that adds strength and durability properties from the inside out. It’s a rotproof, rustproof composite alternative to traditional wood and steel. Designed to install like the lumber but made to last. It is not in the same pricing category as the kiln dried lumber, but we believe it is the future of deck building. It comes with a premium price tag, but you pay for what you get. It does come with a limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.  We understand it is not for every client but please let us know if you would like more information regarding this option for your project. Composite framing can't span as far as wood, steel or aluminum deck framing but this is a great option for elevated decks that only come out 14' from the home or lower to the ground decks.

#4 Steel Framing

This option has been on the market now for years but is not talked about enough in our industry as the best option to frame with!  Steel deck framing gives you a stronger, straighter and more uniform frame for composite decking. This framing eliminates the imperfections that wood provides. Metal is engineered for longer spans, so fewer posts obstruct views below if you are building out a patio space under the deck. And don’t worry about tomorrow, because you’ll enjoy the peace of mind of a 25-year limited warranty – something wood deck framing can’t come close to matching. Fortress steel framing is an exceptional choice for deck framing due to its superior strength, durability, and longevity compared to traditional wood framing. It is highly resistant to moisture, rot, insects, and warping, ensuring your deck remains structurally sound for years. Unlike wood, which can deteriorate over time, steel framing provides a stable and sturdy foundation that supports more intricate and expansive deck designs without sagging or shifting. Additionally, its eco-friendly nature, being made from recyclable materials, aligns with sustainable building practices. Choosing Fortress steel framing means investing in a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution that enhances the overall safety, appearance, and value of your deck.

Steel deck framing comes pre-painted black giving the space below the deck a clean look. Fortress also has a unique stair system allowing deck steps to also be framed with low maintenance steel.
